About BTHVN2020

In 2020 Germany will join the entire world in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. In a unique cooperative venture, the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Rhine-Sieg District and the City of Bonn have joined forces to set up the Beethoven Jubiläums GmbH(Beethoven Anniversary Society) in order to coordinate this important jubilee and to publicise it beneath the umbrella brandBTHVN2020.

The Beethoven Anniversary Society was founded on 1 July 2016 as an affiliate of the Stiftung Beethoven-Haus (Beethoven-Haus Foundation). It receives subsidies from all four regional authorities, redirects the funds provided to the Jubilee programme by the public sector, and adds its own initiatives to the projects. As of 1 September 2017, subsidies for cultural projects associated with the Jubilee could be applied for on this website. The Anniversary Society is headed by managing director Ralf Birkner and artistic director Malte Boecker.

The goals of the Beethoven Jubilee are to communicate Beethoven’s music, to strengthen and promote innovative projects and to enhance Bonn’s image as the city of Beethoven. The wide-ranging events of the Jubilee will offer magnificent musical experiences in various forms of projects throughout the year 2020.  Whether in concerts or exhibitions, operas or ballet and theatre productions or symposia and outreach programmes, Beethoven’s music will be illuminated from a great many different perspectives, from historically informed performances to contemporary cultural activities.

Projects eligible for subsidies must be related to Ludwig van Beethoven and should take place between 16 December 2019 and September 2021 in the region of North Rhine-Westphalia, with a geographical focus on the City of Bonn and Rhine-Sieg District.
